Most people wash their sheets less often than they should. The answer might surprise you — and so might how easy it is to stay on top of it with pickup laundry service.
The short answer: once a week.
Dermatologists and sleep experts consistently recommend washing bed sheets every seven days. During a typical week of sleep, one person sheds about 30 to 40 million skin cells, along with sweat, body oils, and any products like lotion or hair serum that transfer to the pillowcase.
Left unwashed, sheets become a breeding ground for dust mites, which feed on dead skin cells. For people with allergies or asthma, this matters significantly. Even without allergies, sleeping on week-old sheets means sleeping in your own accumulated oils and bacteria — a cycle most people would prefer to break.
What happens if you go longer?
Going two or three weeks between washes isn’t catastrophic, but it does allow dust mite populations to build, which can worsen allergy symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. It also allows oils and dead skin to embed more deeply into the fabric, making a thorough clean harder to achieve.
Pillowcases deserve special attention. Because your face is in direct contact with the pillowcase for hours each night, bacteria transfer can contribute to skin breakouts. Washing pillowcases every three to four days — or having two sets to rotate — is a simple way to improve skin health.
WashPro tip: Set a recurring weekly laundry pickup for sheets and towels. When the habit is automatic, you never have to think about it.
How to wash sheets the right way.
A few guidelines apply regardless of how often you wash:
- Use warm or hot water for cotton sheets. Heat kills dust mites more effectively than cold water.
- Avoid overloading the machine. Sheets need room to tumble and rinse fully.
- Use the extra rinse cycle when possible. Detergent residue on sheets can irritate skin over time.
- Dry sheets fully on a medium-to-high setting. Damp sheets left in the dryer can develop mildew.
When to wash more often.
Certain situations call for more frequent washing. If you sleep with a pet, weekly is the bare minimum — dander, fur, and outdoor dirt accumulate quickly. If you’ve been sick, wash sheets immediately after recovering. In summer months when sweating is heavier, twice weekly is worth considering.
The easiest solution: scheduled pickup laundry.
Most people don’t fall short on sheet-washing because they don’t know the recommendation — they fall short because it’s inconvenient. Hauling heavy bedding to a laundromat, waiting, and hauling it back is genuinely tedious. A home washer handles a queen set easily enough, but fitting king-size comforters is a different story.
WashPro’s laundry pickup service lets DC, Maryland, and Virginia residents schedule a weekly sheet and linen pickup. We wash, dry, and return everything folded within 24 hours. You set the schedule once, and it just happens.
