A laundry service Fairfax VA customers use most — wash and fold by the pound — charges about $19 for 10 pounds at WashPro’s $1.89 rate. Ten pounds is roughly one week of clothes for one adult: about 5 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, a week of underwear and socks, and a couple of towels. Most services, including ours, have a minimum order ($35 at WashPro), so 10 pounds on its own gets billed at the minimum. Here’s how to picture the weight, and how to get the most out of the minimum.
What 10 pounds of laundry looks like
Nobody using a laundry service Fairfax VA has a scale next to the hamper, so here’s the visual guide.
- One standard 13-gallon kitchen trash bag, stuffed full: 12 to 15 pounds.
- A standard laundry basket, heaped: 10 to 12 pounds.
- One load in an apartment-size washer: 8 to 10 pounds.
- One load in a full-size home washer (typical in Fairfax and Burke townhouses): 12 to 15 pounds.
What individual items weigh (dry)
- T-shirt: 0.4 to 0.5 lb
- Dress shirt: 0.5 lb
- Jeans: 1 to 1.5 lb
- Hoodie or sweatshirt: 1 lb
- Bath towel: 1 to 1.5 lb
- Hand towel: 0.3 lb
- Queen sheet set (fitted, flat, two pillowcases): 3 to 4 lb
- Underwear and socks, one week: 1 to 1.5 lb
So a laundry service Fairfax VA week for one person — 5 shirts (2.5 lb), 3 pants (3.5 lb), underwear and socks (1.5 lb), 2 towels (2.5 lb) — lands right around 10 pounds. Add sheets and it’s 13 to 14.
What a typical Fairfax household sends
- One adult: 10 to 13 lb a week
- Couple: 18 to 25 lb
- Couple with a toddler: 25 to 35 lb
- Family of four with school-age kids (most of Fairfax, Burke, Centreville and Chantilly): 30 to 45 lb
- GMU student: 8 to 12 lb, which is why students do better sending every two weeks
- Anyone who works out daily: add 5 to 8 lb of gym clothes and towels
What a laundry service Fairfax VA charges for 10 pounds
Laundry service Fairfax VA per-pound rates run $1.50 to $3.00 depending on whether it’s a laundromat counter, an app, or a local pickup service. At WashPro’s $1.89:
- 10 lb: $18.90 (billed at the $35 minimum on its own)
- 15 lb: $28.35 (also under the minimum)
- 20 lb: $37.80 — clears the minimum, pickup and delivery free
- 30 lb: $56.70
- 40 lb: $75.60
If you only have 10 pounds
Three options, all better than paying $35 for $19 of laundry service Fairfax VA work:
- Send every two weeks. 20 pounds, $37.80, over the minimum. Buy an extra week of underwear if you have to. This is what most single laundry service Fairfax VA customers do.
- Add the bedding. A sheet set (4 lb) plus a comforter ($19.99 flat) gets you over $35 with things you’d have to deal with eventually anyway.
- Split with a roommate. Two bags, one pickup, one bill. Each bag is washed separately and comes back separately.
How a good laundry service Fairfax VA weighs it
Dry, when the bag arrives, before anything goes in a machine. Wet laundry weighs roughly twice as much, so any service that weighs after washing is charging you for water. Ask if it isn’t stated. The American Cleaning Institute has general guidance on load sizes if you’re doing it at home.
