Wash and fold Alexandria VA costs a couple about $38 a week with pickup and delivery. The laundromat, on the machine cost alone, is about $15 cheaper. On the full cost — machines, detergent, the drive, Old Town parking, and the afternoon — it’s much closer than people expect, and for anyone in Alexandria without a laundromat within walking distance, wash and fold usually comes out ahead.
What a laundromat actually costs in Alexandria
Take a typical 20-pound week for a couple in Del Ray, the West End, or a rowhouse in Old Town.
- Washers: two loads in standard machines, or one large-capacity machine. $5 to $9.
- Dryers: 45 to 60 minutes across two dryers. $4 to $7.
- Detergent and softener: about $1.50 per week if you bring your own, $3 to $4 from the vending machine.
- Driving: most Alexandria neighborhoods are a 10 to 15 minute drive from the nearest laundromat on Route 1 or Duke Street. Two round trips if you leave and come back. $3 to $5 in gas.
- Parking: free at most laundromats, but if you’re coming from Old Town, leaving your street spot on a Saturday is a real cost.
Cash outlay: $14 to $25 per week. Time outlay: two to three hours, most of it sitting in a plastic chair or making a second trip.
What wash and fold Alexandria VA costs for the same 20 pounds
- Laundromat wash-and-fold counter: $1.50 to $2.50/lb, so $30 to $50. You still drive there twice.
- Pickup and delivery (WashPro): $1.89/lb, so $37.80. Detergent and softener included. Pickup and delivery free because it’s over $35. Zero trips.
Every wash and fold Alexandria VA order with WashPro is washed in its own machine, never combined with another customer’s load, and tagged so nothing goes missing. Estimate your own load if you’re not sure what 20 pounds looks like.
The honest difference
Doing it yourself at a laundromat saves roughly $15 to $20 a week over wash and fold Alexandria VA pickup. In exchange, you spend two to three hours. That works out to $6 to $8 an hour for your time. If you’re a student near Alexandria’s campuses with more time than money, that’s a reasonable trade. If you’re a two-income household in Rosemont or Seminary Hill, it almost never is.
Where the laundromat comparison falls apart
- Families. 40 pounds is four to six machine loads. You’re not doing that in one visit without monopolizing half the store, and the dryer time alone runs $12 to $15.
- Comforters. Laundromat big machines charge $6 to $10 for one comforter wash plus $4 to $8 to dry it properly. Wash and fold Alexandria VA with WashPro is $19.99 flat per comforter and it comes back dry all the way through.
- Weekend crowds. Saturday morning at any laundromat along Route 1 or in Arlandria means waiting for machines. The two-hour trip becomes three.
- No car. Hauling 20 pounds of laundry on the DASH bus or a 15-minute walk changes the calculation entirely.
Where the laundromat still wins
- It’s a two-minute walk from your door.
- You have under 10 pounds a week and a $35 minimum doesn’t make sense for you.
- You need it done in the next 90 minutes and it’s after 10 AM.
Wash and fold Alexandria VA: questions people ask
Does the price include detergent? Yes. Standard detergent and softener are included at $1.89/lb. If you prefer a fragrance-free option, note it when you book. The American Cleaning Institute explains the differences between detergent types if you’re deciding.
Do you serve all of Alexandria? Old Town, Del Ray, Arlandria, Rosemont, Seminary Hill, the West End, Landmark, Huntington and Mount Vernon. Wash and fold Alexandria VA pickups run 6 AM to 7 PM every day.
How is it weighed? Dry, before washing. Wet laundry weighs about twice as much, so a service that weighs afterward is charging you for water.
Is there a contract? No. Book once, book weekly, or book when the hamper overflows. Nothing to cancel.
The short version
Laundromat: cheaper by about $15 a week, costs you an afternoon. Wash and fold Alexandria VA with pickup: $37.80 a week for a couple, costs you nothing but the minute it takes to book. Which one is “cheaper” depends entirely on what your afternoon is worth.
